It's not just the sailing

Submitted by jono on 30 May 2017.

I have to remind myself this from time to time. I'm always glad I do, though I can never entirely escape the nagging voice that says I should be sailing whenever I see a decent breeze.

Today the sea started lumpy, and the wind was light and 'on the nose', meaning that a 25km crossing of Tanafjorden would require a much longer upwind zigzag course. The tide up here never helps much either: it flows west to east for 6 and a bit hours, then basically stops for the next 6 hours, then flows west to east again. Useful to know, but not exactly useful. And of course the snow showers were still rolling through. The prospect of becoming becalmed halfway across Tanafjorden wasn't tempting.

Plus tomorrow the wind direction changes and what might take 10 hours today could take just an hour or two tomorrow (maybe!).

So I allowed myself to not sail. Instead I have had a tour of Berlivåg, and a review by road of some of the coastline sailed on the way up here. I was pleasantly surprised to be genuinely interested, and learned a lot. There's a fascinating museum up here too you should visit, and the area also has clear surf potential. Neither surf nor museum are crowded.

Highlight of the day was a brief appearance of the sun that revealed perhaps the most stunning beach I've ever seen. Maybe I've said that a few times about a few beaches, but this one really is quite special. Enjoy a few pics below.

  • Snow showers throughout the day
  • Fish (haddock) landed at Berlevåg - destined for near you?
  • A brief sunny interlude, revealed this...
  • Wow, again!

Thanks to my hosts and guides Toby and Irina from the 'Deli Cafe' for helping me stay warm and get fat, and to Sven-Harald from the local magazine 'Berlevågingen' for local insights and a day to reflect upon.

Tomorrow I'll be back on the water :)
