Bodø and Polar Bears

Submitted by jono on 25 Jun 2017.

I'm rather disappointed with myself for missing the Hurtigruten ship MS Nordlys that yesterday called in at Bodø. MS Nordlys is the boat I sailed up to Kirkenes in, so it was a lost an opportunity to reacquaint with the crew and 'expedition team' who had become friends on the journey up. Drat it!

Yesterday was spent working. I still do the occasional day of normal work. Bodø library was a nice place to do that.

Accommodation in Bodø was a nice boat skippered by Rob, who to my surprise recognised me, from my days working as an instructor at Minorca Sailing. I'd sailed into the marina just as Rob and his crew Alistair were tying up, which was a complete coincidence. As well as having a better memory for faces than I do, Rob beat me at scrabble.

Today I saw polar bears, that on closer inspection were rams, and whale bones that really were whale bones.

  • Arrival at Bodø - busy!
  • Departure from Bodø - photo with Rob
  • Polar bears...
  • ...can be found in Norway, but only at Svalbard
  • One of today's more pleasing mountain views
  • Whale vertebra on beach at Støtt
